Bocce Ball Garden

This series of images highlights the texture and shape of a Japanese inspired garden at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, taken in October 2004. Looking down from high above, you might believe the scene to be pebbles lying on a beach. Looking askew, from close in, shadow and shape become dominant. Realism becomes abstract. You find yourself in the middle of a bocce ball game, perhaps from the perspective of the pallina. But if you take a quick breath, you might just catch the smell of a damp yew in early morning.
